Design Star - Challenge 2 - Dueling Kitchens
Task: Choose teams and re-do the outdated kitchens of two suburban neighbors, the McCarty's and the Sturtridges
Budget: $10,000 per kitchen
Time Frame: 28 hours (Day 1 - 9 hrs; Day 2 - 14 hours; Day 3 - 5 hours)
Judging Criteria: Overall design, functionality, team work, fulfilling the wishes of the clients
Winner receives: $5,000 gift card from Sears
Two contestants are sent home
After picking teams "playground style", the teams set out to their project sites and to view DVD's made by the homeowners.
Team McCarty includes: "Organic" Josh F as team captain, with Todd, Christina, Will and Robb
The McCarty's are a young family of four and expressed a desire for a bar area separating the kitchen from the dining area and an "old world" theme, which they'd started with their faux brick painted doorway.
While Josh F was the team captain, Todd quickly stepped over him to take control of the initial planning. The team also decided to make decisions in a democratic manner with little or no discussion. This is a pretty terrible way to come up with a good design plan as it doesn't allow for any analysis or thoughtful consideration of the plan or process.
Josh F was not only a poor leader, he clearly had no knowledge of a Tuscan or old-world design style. This screen shot said it all - grapes , these are Tuscan looking! For this effort, Josh F was eliminated, which is a bit of a shame, since the green design he seemed experienced in was never realized.
Will seems to have excellent instincts, but does need to be more assertive in getting his point across and getting his way. This shot above was his clearly frightened response to Josh's "Tuscan" fake ivy and grapes.
Todd continued to show off his physique along with his building skills. He overstepped Josh F in a fairly arrogant manner and seemed a big proponent of the democratic system. However, I would say that it was more because he knew he and Robb would likely agree and they could pull Josh in with them - so 3 against 2, they would win.
Christina came up with the fountain/wine bar concept. It meant taking out a pantry closet for this family of four and Will immediately questioned the functionality of that idea. But he was outvoted and so they made a fountain. Which the family loved.
The team was smart in using a laminate counter top that looked natural (on tv) and was something they could achieve in the time allotted. Rob showed himself to have some decent artistic skills in faux painting. I actually didn't hate this as much as Martha McCulley did, but I think the combination of the crackled cabinets and faux bricks was a just too much. I did like the wrought iron basket weave knobs on the cabinets, which might have been painted a more neutral color that didn't make them stand out quite so much. Cabinets should only be a focal point if they are actually beautiful. If you can't make them look high end - or fabulously quirky - then it's probably best to go neutral.

Ultimately, the room was a big improvement over the original and the homeowners loved it. But, as Vern said, professional designers need to give the client more than they know they need. Their rendering of "Tuscan" was amateurish in its concept, although their execution was well coordinated and they did accomplish a big change from the original.
Team Sturtridge includes: Neeraja as team captain, with Kim, Scott, Adriana and "Sparkle" Josh J

The Sturtridges didn't offer any suggestions for design style or colors, but did express a desire for new counters, a wine bar and cooktop. This kitchen had a lot of counter top area, which meant that they really needed to plan that aspect carefully. Team captain Neeraja expressed calm and decisive confidence that she could easily tile the back wall counter top and back splash. Kim worked with her on this project and while she apparently seemed to know how to tile, she clearly deferred the planning to Neeraja. Unfortunately, Neeraja was overly confident in her skills - particularly in her planning and assumptions about availability of tile. The home store didn't have the glass block tile they were looking for (which isn't a surprise, as this is normally a special order product) so they had to head to a specialty tile store. The price they were quoted of $32.09/sq. ft. was what one would expect for this type of tile - something that Neeraja was clearly unaware of. So, out went that idea. Through out the process, an injured Scott expressed concern over the status of the tile and his worries about their ability to pull it off. His concerns were clearly spot on, as they didn't finish in the end and the selections themselves - black 4x4 ceramic tiles on the counter with a rough granity stone backsplash - were pretty uninspired.
Neeraja, who was sent packing for leaving an unfinished room, seemed to never really take responsibility for her decision making. Her teammates all suffered because of this , yet she seemed wholly unconcerned. "Well, now we know."
Adriana, who's a dynamo with the power tools, extended the center island and did all the main carpentry work on the project. I don't like the way the island was extended - it seems clunky and awkward and there seems to be room for only one stool. It was hard to tell in the photos how they finished the countertops on the island and front counter, but it seems streaky and dark. Overall the entire kitchen had no real design style that was consistent throughout. Again, as team leader, Neeraja should have been more in charge of the overall plan, not so focused on her one project - the unfinished tile job. They were successful in purchasing all new appliances for the kitchen, although the sink was never installed.
Meanwhile, the design star of the evening was clearly "Sparkle" Josh. His shopping trip was hugely successful - the round table and chairs, the mirror and the window treatments worked very well and he was very budget conscious. The mirror was a huge hit with the judges and while it was very pretty - I couldn't help but worry about whether it would fall over and how often it would need to be cleaned. However, there were no kids in the house, so it would probably work for those particular clients. So, success!

So, in the end Josh J was the winner of the $5K Sears gift card. Josh is proving that his "sparkle" is more sophisticated and broad in scope than his initial audition might have suggested and he's doing it with a wonderfully self-deprecating personality. Loving Sparkle Josh!
Todd, Christina, Adriana, Will and Scott were all deemed to have made good design choices and made valuable contributions to the team effort and move forward.
Kim placed in the last group as she "has yet to stand out, but has proven to be a good team player" and she was moved to the next round.
Neeraja was immediately canceled for her incomplete work leaving Josh F and Robb on the block at the end. Josh showed no leadership or design skill and Robb over fauxed his projects. In the end, Josh F was simply too green (pun intended) to handle this level of competition. Part of being a successful designer is being educated in history, design styles, world styles and having a deep knowledge of many different cultures. And, it's about knowing what you don't know. Josh F was really like a deer in the headlights. Robb isn't well liked by his team mates, with the exception of Todd and they seem to have a very high-fiving "we're men, we rock!" kind of thing going which doesn't leave room for much actual thought. It will be interesting to see how they progress.
So, two challenges down, five remain. They said at the end of tonights show that two contestants will go home next week as well, and that it's an individual challenge, in identical white box rooms.
So, of the remaining eight contestants, who are rising to the top and who are sinking?

Stumble It!

Linda,
Excellent summary and commentary! I look forward to reading your professional opinion of the spaces after each show.
I find myself agreeing with the judges a lot more this season (especially Vern) and think that thus far their elimination decisions have been spot on.
Of the remaining eight:
Sparkle Josh -- Another great showing this week and fun to watch. I like that he has style and talent, but doesn't take himself too seriously.
Will -- Yes, great instincts. Seems to have the most professional design experience of the bunch. I expect him to go far.
Todd -- Capable and the most telegenic. Perhaps the best construction skills, but have yet to see much of his design sensibillity. Not liking his attitude too much.
Scott -- We've got a crier! Absent a meltdown, might do OK.
Adriana -- Surprised me this week with her construction skills. Who knew?
Christina -- Fun to watch but, as Nina Garcia might say, "I question the taste level." She was the originator of the impractical, fugly and storage-wasting fountain/wine bar. Let's just leave it at that.
Kim -- Who?
Robb -- As I said last week, I'm eagerly awaiting his departure. He comes across as arrogant, boorish, rude and difficult. Clearly doesn't know how to play well with others, and not shy about throwing a fellow contestant under the bus. Robb really seems be missing the bigger picture: i.e., not only to survive the seven elimination challenges but also to position yourself as a potential HGTV show host. I can't imagine ever wanting to see a whole show of Robb and his bad attitude.
I'm looking forward to next week's "white box" challenge so we can see each contestant's individual efforts.
Great job, Linda!
Boy, I thought both those kitchen makeovers were disasters. The Tuscan kitchen, though, was bad to begin with so I didn't really care that they turned it into that tacky mess. The orange Formica kitchen, however, almost made Eric and me cry because it was so beautiful to start with. That was the exact kitchen we want! The fact that they destroyed it was very sad.
Neeraja's team started out so well and really seemed to get along with each other. Too bad they just couldn't finish the job. The other team did not work well together, although they were able to finish. You're right, voting on individual aspects of the room without considering the full efect was a really stupid way to design a room. Will was the voice of reason, so obviously he was ignored.
And I agree with Greg: who on earth would watch a show with Robb as the host? I'd rather shoot myself.
Linda, I was going to leave the blogging about this show up to you and Trixie, but the two kitchens were so piss poor awful that I just had to vent an opinion of my own.
It's as Vern says: Designers should not only listen to their clients, but they are in a position to lift and elevate, which our two teams did not do. In fact, I question their taste levels, even sparkling Josh's.
You recapped the show perfectly. I think the two designers that were cut should have had their shows snuffed (though that Robb is still in the competition is a miracle.)
No, he is not a good faux painter. I should know, 'cause I've faked with the best of them. Cracks are not painted with black lines; you use two hues. And there's an art to painting brick and stone. There are some easy tricks that painters and muralists know, which Robb has no clue about.
I was disappointed in the designers this week, and completely agreed with the judges. They were spot on.
Hi Greg, great assessments of each of the remaining cast members. I almost feel like we could handicap when they will get eliminated.
Eric, I agree with you and Greg - no one would watch the Robb show. But then, I saw nothing in Neeraja that would make me want to turn on the tv for her either. It's a wonder they made the cut.
Welcome, Ms. Place, we knew you'd get sucked in!
Nothing says "Faux Tuscan" quite like crackle glaze, rattan stools and inappropriately deployed garden statuary! Pure design genius.
i'm so glad ms.place put me on to your blog!!! i love DesignStar and need my blogging fix....
the kitchens just seemed tacky to me once they were done. like what - sorry - low-class people with pretensions to grandeur would come up with.
I would like to hear more about - fabulously quirky kitchen cabinets! what would count as "fabulously quirky"?
and poor Eric3000! i don't even like orange and i felt a twinge of regret seeing that kitchen go au revoir!
i would NEVER watch a Robb show, or a Todd show. I would LOVE to watch The Sparkle Josh Show, though!!! he looks like he'd make an awesome shopping/decorating friend!
i'm looking forward to the white-booth challenge, especially after the humdrum white booths of Top Design!
(and was I the only one who remembered Carissa's pit-bed when I saw the dining pit in the Design Star loft??)
Welcome Frogboot! I though about Carisa's bed as well. And I agree, there was a "pretension" of grandeur thing going on that was a bit surprising. I kind of miss Goil and his unworkable ideas - but at least they were original. I am looking forward to the individual challenge next week, so we'll see what each can really do, and what their individual style is. Well, hopefully I think they're shopping in a dollar store.
Nice recap. I can't stand Robb or Todd. Personally, I would rather they had cut Robb instead of Organic Josh...now we have to put up with at least one more week of watching his incessant arrogance!
Sorry about deleting the above post. I made a really stupid error and I couldn't bear to let it stand!
I'm with Eric on the countertop. It is the one thing that could have remained. They could have done a great mid-century mod design. A tile countertop is awful!! It is slippery. It is so easy to break things on it. And it is hard to clean. Plus: black tile? Ugh. If Neerja is so experienced with tile then she should have known to have spec'd it. And she should have known that it would take too much time to do anything more than a back-splash.
I really felt bad for WILL. He was the only one with experience (and taste!) on that team. That 3 vs 2 business just turned into a big bully match.
ROBB, CHRISTINA and TODD:
None are designers.
They lack taste.
They lack sophistication.
They lack education.
They are bullies (with women it is called "prima donna" but same difference).
All three of them have the kind of personalities that make me not want to watch the show.
TODD has carpentry skills but that isn't the same thing as being a designer. TODD's idea of leadership is to be loud and not listen and shove his ideas down everyone's throats.
ROBB is happy to be his little henchman. ROBB just has to go. People like that really make my skin crawl. They are keeping him around because they think he is more interesting but I'd be more interested to see what "Green Design" Organic Josh would have done and Robb's boorishness is a reason I would stop watching. Guys like that make my skin crawl: all that explosive anger that they can't control. They aren't entertaining. They are scary. And they are a dime a dozen. There is nothing remotely unique or interesting about them.
ADRIANNA and KIM need to prove themselves. I worry about taste issues a bit with ADRIANNA -- that countertop was pretty bad.
But they just need to hand the show over to SPARKLE JOSH now. He's the clear star. He's really the reason I tune in.
At this point I'm not liking the show very much due to the lack of design talent and the unpleasant personalities.
Hi all,
Was away and only just caught up on the shows. Here are my few thoughts:
1. I wish that we'd get to see and hear more of the judging deliberations. On PR, TC and SG, the comments from the judges were/are often insightful (and acerbic and funny). It's a shame that HGTV is dumping them for dramatic effect.
2. Todd and Robb are the guys that I used to play volley ball with who would push me out of the way to try to play the ball that I had already called as "mine." So far, neither has shown any design talent.
3. Christina. Wow! As a Yankee now living in the South, I can tell you that there is nothing "sweet" about that girl. I was so glad that Vern called her out on the "compromising" in E1. And removing a pantry for a fountain? Ugh!
4. Sparkle Josh and Will seem the ones to watch.
5. I'm looking forward to seeing Adriana in an individual competition...want to see her design skills.
6. Kim is a good team player but she lacks the experience that will be needed to make it through.
7. Scott's tears are getting kind of annoying. Even though he was right about the tile, Kim was correct that their team should not have been comparing themselves to the other team. They needed to focus on what they were doing.
I'm liking this show. It's not about the best designer, it's about who's the best TV designer. That's a whole different story. HGTV has tweaked the format from last year to make this more apparent. Looking forward to tonight's episode.
Linda: we should handicap who will get eliminated. Reading all of the posts (I did the unforgivable and wrote mine before reading all of the other comments), it seems that everyone has the same take on the contestants.
Unfortunately, the producers will keep BB and DD on far too long because they are obnoxious (why do they think that that's what we want to see?). Same could apply to Christina and Kim since there are only 3 women left...
PS Greg, Eric3000, Ms. Place, Frogboots, zeenes, and Trixie: pole sana for simply reiterating what all of you had said!
Valpal- speaking of handicapping, this blogger, Scottius Maximus has done just that!

I just found his blog via my Design Star Google alert. He seems to hold the same general feeling everyone else does.
well, that got cut off, go here, it's a new post:

Thanks for the link, Linda. What a hoot, Linda. He probably got the idea of handicapping from you (same place I did!)
