Design Star 3 - Epi 6 - Kitchen Makeover

All right, I'm bored with this show and I couldn't care less who wins. None of them work well on camera - and really, none work well with others. Blah.

Tracee and Mikey V are out. Tracee as team leader who showed no leadership skills and little design inspiration in the kitchen. Mikey because of his on camera skills - since the judges deemed the room so lacking in design that they had to judge based on their face time on camera.

Mikey V and Tricia were clearly out for Tracee (deservedly or not) and basically contradicted her at every turn. As far as I am concerned, they are equally responsible for the lack of va-va-voom in the space. They were more caught up with doing the opposite of what she was saying than actually trying to make a really beautiful space. They lost focus on the task.

As for on camera work - what was up with the judges? Vern was watching Trish like he had a school girl crush on her (really?). They suggested Mikey needed better eye contact, but I thought Trish had no eye contact either. Jennifer was good on camera - but an awful lot like current design star Kim Myles. Do we need another chipper yet vapid host? I liked Matt's presentation. I think he' s the dark horse. Before

The clients wanted an update - including more color and less panelling. The contestants should have listened to their clients' wishes for more color. I never heard any of them speak to that point. So, the color palette is completely blah. Yes, a tile back splash could have accomplished this - but so could have a pint of red paint. If they'd splashed a little red all over the place - the judges would have loved it. End of story.

But, overall, in the short time frame that they had, I think they did a great job and made some smart choices that left the clients with a great base; much more than the clients would have been able to accomplish on their own. Vern was totally of the mark with his bitchy "horrendous kitchen" comment. The floor is beautiful, the cabinets looked like new, the counter top was well done and neutral enough to be flexible. The window treatment was fine and whoever said (Martha or Cynthia - but I can't be bothered to check my tape) it had no relationship to anything else was on something.

Jennifer
Matt
Trish

PS - the lighting on the ceiling is television lighting. The designers have no choice on that.

Wow. This was the most annoying episode of this show ever.

The designers had 24 hours to replace the flooring, the counters, the walls, refinish the cabinets, and buy all new appliances. What the hell did the judges want? A rainforest with a waterfall in the middle of the room?

The family got a perfectly nice, updated kitchen. Of course a colorful tile backsplash would have been nice (or, as you point out, some red paint) but I doubt even that would have been exciting enough for the judges. I also don't think the judges realize that you have really limited options (countertops, tile, etc.) when you have to buy materials that are in stock.

And yes, Tracee spends too much time shopping. We get it. But I was so annoyed that the other designers wanted nothing to do with making a design plan at the beginning and then complained later that there was no design plan. And all that drama about cutting off the ring (which involved ALL the designers for a considerable amount of time and not just ONE designer for a few minutes, as Vern suggested) really did have an impact on the planning stage so I think Tracee had every right to mention it.

And then Trish and Jennifer are kept on the show simply because they made no real contribution at all and therefore couldn't be blamed for anything.

I'm with you; I just don't care anymore.

I too could care less who wins - especially now that they've kicked out the adorable Mikey V.

I know, I think they are losing us! And I'm still shocked at Vern's "horrendous kitchen" comment. Maybe it's just that they realized they were getting no real design inspiration on any challenge and they cracked?

And David - I totally agree with your post - with no "Winner" there is no motivation to be anything more than mediocre.
