Elegant Thrifting

I was out shopping with my bff Beth today looking for set pieces for her upcoming opera - The Old Maid and the Thief. Her production budget is pretty limited, so we headed over to Elite Repeat in Hanover, MA. We were looking for mid-century little old lady type items. Well, nothing there today fit the bill - but I sure found some pieces that I wanted to take home with me. I didn't ultimately pick anything up - I have nothing I really need and nothng I want to get rid of. Oh well..

Here are a few items I was drooling over:

I have a drop front desk that is a similar color and style as this bureau. The fluted sides, the beadwork and gentle bowed front are really special. At $188 (current price) - this is a great buy.

This cane back settee made me gasp when I walked into the room. So pretty! I'd rather see a soft antique linen rather than this over used Waverly floral. The center back has the ghost of what as once probably an applied carved applique - which was cool on it's own, or could perhaps be painted. I couldn't find a price for this piece.

This period dresser and mirror with matched veneers is a real eye catcher. The feminine shape and mix of woods are very special.

This little cane back French style settee has so many possibilites! And, at $109, quite a bargain!

Another dresser and mirror - this one in a Birds Eye maple.

And this French style arm chair is billed as a "Decorators' Dream". Well, at $69, it's pretty dreamy. And for a few hundred dollars more, it can be reupholstered and made new again. The chair is very sturdy and the seat cushion is horsehair.

And how cute is this little dining set!?! I think at $179, it's possibly a little overpriced, but still a fantastic look. Because of our proximity to the ocean - we have a big rust problem and if this were used outdoors, it woud need a lot of care and maintenance.

And I adore this black Empire style bureau. The simple yet substantial lines are wonderful. This piece is currently $329. I wish they had a pair!

Do you have any great thrift/second hand stores in your area?

You've made me drool--those are fabbo pieces! The veneered pieces are so beautiful, and that last dresser is so substantial. I know I'd feel more secure with that in my house!

I keep thinking I may go back and pick up that small upholstered piece. For $69, how can I go wrong??
