Have a bathe

In Downton Abbey on PBS,  Cora, the Countess of Grantham (played by Elizabeth McGovern) takes a bath in a well appointed bathroom. Now if only her ladies maid didn't try to kill her and did succeed in causing a miscarriage by leaving a bar of soap in the wrong location.

As I am currently working with client's on a new master bathroom plan, I was paying particular attention to this bathroom in the series. I wanted to share some of my inspiration images for some modern, yet classic, bathrooms.

I love the first image the best - although the Barry Dixon is a close second. I think I especially love the towel/accessory stand. Thanks for the lovely images!

Yes my favourite would have to be the first example with the dark wood glazed dresser - relaxed, romantic and more of a 'bath in a room' rather than a bathroom.

I could sit in that Chesterfield with the yummy bun feet and admire that beautiful breakfront all day long!
Antiques are so pretty in bathrooms against all the white. They certainly warm things up but be careful and pay close attention to the humidity factor! Steam from showers and old veneers do not mix well.
That screen is a brilliant and very pretty solution for a bit of privacy without blocking all the light. Window coverings could never compete with those windows!
I say, thank you Linda and Waterworks for a nice long soak.

Dear Linda, Looks like you are going to incorporate a free standing tub. I love mine... in the middle of the room, near a French window and a balcony which holds pots of geraniums in summer. Mine is very similar to the Kerry Joyce designed bathroom, Kohler tub and all.

Bathrooms are one of my favorite spaces to design and I too have a particular fondness for those with a period feel and have several of these same images saved as tear sheets. I recently saw the Tracery bathroom and thought the screen was fantastic!

Here it is only Wednesday and I'm going nuts getting a set of drawings done! After reading your post, I now know exactly what I'm going to do when I put my pencil down tonight! Take a long hot soak! Mmmmmm... Draw faster!!!

I would be happy with any of these bathrooms, but my favorites are Dixon's and Paxton's. Oh, to have a soaking tub would be such a treat. I miss Downtown Abbey, but not that maid O'Brien.

Hi Linda,

These are all wonderful bathrooms and I particularly like the ones with a freestanding bath and lots of space to create a 'real setting'. Given a bathroom is such an intimate and emotional space where we want to be able to unwind and relax, I also find lighting and ambiance very important.

Lovely inspiration. Thank you, and good luck with your project.

Dear Linda, I also wanted to mention the Barry Dixon (5th) bathroom. The tiled wall, behind the large mirror is so original and beautiful. I especially like the way he used hand painted tiles on the lower part and then changed to simple white tiles for the remainder of the wall.

Beautiful baths! And Downton Abbey is my all time favorite Masterpiece. Apart from having a personal assistant with you while you bathe, I've always wondered how one manages to keep from spraying water all over the room in one of those sit-down, hand-held sprayer situations. Love your site--was sent it by a fan, Catherine Nolin. Thank you!
